Would you like to study journalism and mass communication at the University of Minnesota? The information below will answer the most frequently asked questions about how to become a student in the SJMC. Admission to SJMC: The School of Journalism and Mass Communication is a part of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota. To become a journalism or communications major in the SJMC, you must first be accepted into CLA as a first-year student (or transfer student). CLA students then apply for the major after completing or enrolling in 30 credits at the University, including 13 credits in courses taken in CLA. Applying for the major usually takes place in the sophomore year.

Admission to the College of Liberal Arts: Admissions into the College of Liberal Arts is competitive. The average high school rank of students admitted into CLA in 2004 was 84%, with four-fifths of the class ranking in the top 75% of their class. The average ACT score of 2004 CLA admits was 25.8, and the average SAT score was 1230. For more information on admissions requirements for CLA, see the admissions homepage.
