ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES

SJMC Alumni Mentor Program
SJMC juniors, seniors and graduate students are eligible to participate in the SJMC Alumni Mentor Program. Online application forms and further information will be available at www.sjmc.umn.edu the first day of fall semester, but you must attend one of the mandatory information sessions before you submit your application. The deadline to apply is Monday, Sept. 24. Mentor Information Sessions will be offered by members of the SJMC Alumni Board at the following times:

Tuesday, September 18 at noon
Thursday, September 20 at 5 pm
Friday, September 21 at 4 pm

Information sessions will be held in the SJMC Conference Center.

Serve on an SJMC committee this year
This is your chance to help shape SJMC policy! Applications for Student Representatives are now available in 110 Murphy Hall. Students can pick up applications to volunteer as a representative to the SJMC Alumni Board or Undergraduate Committee. Two students will serve on each committee. Princeton University Public and International Affairs Summer Institute
The PPIA Fellowship Program is designed to prepare college juniors or rising seniors from diverse backgrounds for graduate studies in public and/or international affairs and groom them for professional roles in public service. There is an array of opportunities under the Fellowship which span a period of development from the junior year of college to beyond the completion of a graduate degree. Mark Pedelty to teach May Term Global Seminar in Mexico
Dr. Pedelty will teach JOUR 3991 Mexican Popular Culture in Mexico during May Term 2008. From public murals and mariachi music to artful films and romantic telenovelas, Mexican popular culture is known throughout the world. University of Minnesota’s American Marketing Association
We are a unique student organization here on campus because our members are given the opportunity to connect and utilize resources provided by the professional AMA chapters.   Opportunities to network and attend events and conferences with marketing professionals are unique and beneficial experiences which gives our members more contacts, tools, and skills to apply to their future careers.  Our organization meets weekly at the Carlson School of Management on Tuesdays from noon to 1:00pm in L-118.  Each meeting features speakers from Twin Cities companies who have experience in the marketing and/or advertising field and are willing to help students learn about the exciting opportunities within these areas.  All majors are welcome!

Sports Career/Internship Fair
The Minnesota Twins are hosting the 3rd annual Sports Career/Internship Fair at the Metrodome on Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 3:30 – 6:30 PM. The 2007 Sports Career/Internship Fair will offer prospective employees the opportunity to learn about a variety of employment and internship opportunities with many teams and sports related organizations throughout the upper Midwest.  The fair will be exclusive to participants who register for the event in advance ($24.50) or at the door ($30, subject to availability).  The entry fee will include one lower reserved ticket to the 7:10 game that night against the Texas Rangers and a food coupon that can be redeemed for a hot dog and soft drink at one of the Metrodome concession stands.

Reporters Institute in Florida
The Society of Professional Journalists Reporters Institute is a crash course in the characteristics of outstanding journalism and the techniques of exceptional journalists. It was created for is young journalists who have graduated and are in their first three years in the journalism profession. The Reporters Institute will be Nov. 11-14 in St. Petersburg. The cost to participate is $300, which includes hotel accommodations and most meals. The application process is competitive, and the deadline to apply is Sept. 21. Minnesota Associated Press Job Fair
The 10th annual print/online journalism jobs fair sponsored by the 29 daily newspapers that make up the Minnesota AP Association will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Coffman Memorial Union. It’s a great opportunity to talk with professional news managers looking for reporters, online journalists, copy/section editors, page designers, graphic artists and photographers. Weekly newspapers have again been invited to interview students interested in community journalism. At lunch, students can talk with professionals in a less formal setting. Coffee and pastries and lunch are included. The $10 registration fee will be reimbursed for the first 25 students who sign-up and attend the job fair. Community Involvement Fair
You can make a difference in your community! Stop by the Coffman Memorial Union on Wednesday, Oct. 3 between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to learn more about volunteer and internship opportunities in the Twin Cities. Get paid for your research ideas!
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduate students either to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor or work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project.  Over 5,000 students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students have developed detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors have gained the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. The Moyers Blog now accepting submissions
The Moyers Blog, the companion site to Bill Moyers Journal, is now accepting submissions of original reporting from journalism students for publication. The Moyers Blog sees tens of
thousands of visitors each week and can be found on the Journal's Web site. Student Work-study Job in SJMC’s Digital Media Studio
A student assistant is needed in the digital media studio supporting journalism students and instructors with print, photographic and video hardware and software. Duties include basic troubleshooting with computer logins and access to servers, preparation of equipment reservations and checkout of equipment, basic maintenance and troubleshooting of printers and computer peripherals. Assist instructors and students in setting up and utilizing lab equipment. Student assistant will do basic cleaning and enforcing of lab use policies. Students should have basic operational skills with digital camcorders and video decks, digital still cameras, PC and Macintosh computers is helpful. Basic familiarity with non-linear editing systems, graphics and page layout programs will be helpful, but some training on-the-job will take place. Light web development skills are also desirable. Student assistant must be punctual and work well with people.

Flexible and include options for weekdays, evenings and weekends. Students must have work-study funds to apply to this position! Knight Foundation and MTV Partner on Global Grant Program for Young Digital Journalism Pioneers 
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and MTV announced last week the Knight News Challenge "Young Creators Award," a new digital journalism grant program for young people age 25 and under anywhere in the world.  The contest will award up to $500,000 to young creators with compelling ideas for using digitally delivered news and information to enhance physical communities – improving the lives of people where they live, work and vote.    The new award is a component of the Knight News Challenge, an annual competition awarding $5 million for innovative ideas using digital experiments to transform community news.   MTV will soon begin promoting the award throughout its international network – spanning more than 160 countries and nearly 500 million households – with promo spots that have been created in nine different languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, French, Russian and more. This year, for the first time, the contest's Web site – www.newschallenge.org – will also allow entrants to invite public comment, to help improve their entries.  A special Web site has also been created for the Young Creators category at think.mtv.com and at www.youngcreatorsaward.com. The Web site will accept applications through Oct. 15, 2007. Winners are expected to be announced by the spring of 2008.

Institute for Human Studies Internships in Journalism
IHS Print Journalism Internships provide a stipend, housing allowance, and travel allowance. Interns are placed at daily newspapers across the country and participate in an opening career building workshop. The internship offers real reporting assignments -- interns this summer averaged 30 clips. The deadline for early decision is November 1. IHS Broadcast Journalism internships offer hands-on paid internships at major media networks or news production houses. For more information, please visit www.TheIHS.org/broadcast. Production Internships are expanding to include placements in video game development in addition to feature film, documentaries, and animation. The Freedom Forum-NCAA Sports Journalism Scholarship Application 2007-08
The Freedom Forum, in cooperation with the NCAA, is seeking scholarship applications from college juniors with career goals in sports journalism, majors in journalism, or experience in campus sports journalism. Eight $3,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2007-08 academic year to outstanding sports journalists. Participants discuss learning theory and strategies, develop teaching skills, create classroom and job search materials, and work with faculty from a range of institutional types.

International TA Program
The International TA Program provides nonnative English speaking graduate students with an opportunity to sharpen their use of discipline-specific English, master a variety of teaching and presentation strategies, and engage in meaningful analyses of the culture of teaching and learning at the University of Minnesota.
