New Media Research@UMN Conference

The conference is open to any University of Minnesota faculty, graduate students, researchers, or librarians working on projects in the area of new media and Internet studies. Kick off the new academic year by connecting with fellow new media researchers about their projects at this important cross-disciplinary collaboration. The conference opens with a reception and poster presentation at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13 and continues with a half-day conference from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 in the Digital Technology Center in Walter Library.

First AdClub Meeting of the Semester!
Our meeting will be held in Murphy 100 on Wednesday, September 12 at 3 p.m. There will be free pizza and an informational session on what to look forward to this semester.

What is AdClub?
AdClub is an fun group of students dedicated to all sides of advertising.
AdClub wants to help you get to know what advertising really is and educate
students on the various careers available in advertising.You can expect
agency tours, resume reviews, speakers from local agencies, networking, an
Intern-for-a-day program and the opportunity to meet fellow advertising
students when you join this group. This year AdClub also plans to participate
in campus events such as Paint the Bridge, Activities Fair, Homecoming
Parade, and many more events.

Every Wednesday at 3:00 in Murphy Hall Room 100
Our office is in 202 Murphy and our office hours are Wednesdays from 2-3 pm.

SJMC Alumni Mentor Program
SJMC juniors, seniors and graduate students are eligible to participate in the SJMC Alumni Mentor Program. Online application forms and further information will be available at www.sjmc.umn.edu the first day of fall semester, but you must attend one of the mandatory information sessions before you submit your application. The deadline to apply is Monday, Sept. 24. Mentor Information Sessions will be offered by members of the SJMC Alumni Board at the following times:

Sports Career/Internship Fair
The Minnesota Twins are hosting the 3rd annual Sports Career/Internship Fair at the Metrodome on Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 3:30 – 6:30 PM. The 2007 Sports Career/Internship Fair will offer prospective employees the opportunity to learn about a variety of employment and internship opportunities with many teams and sports related organizations throughout the upper Midwest.  The fair will be exclusive to participants who register for the event in advance ($24.50) or at the door ($30, subject to availability).  The entry fee will include one lower reserved ticket to the 7:10 game that night against the Texas Rangers and a food coupon that can be redeemed for a hot dog and soft drink at one of the Metrodome concession stands.

Minnesota Associated Press Job Fair
The 10th annual print/online journalism jobs fair sponsored by the 29 daily newspapers that make up the Minnesota AP Association will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Coffman Memorial Union. It’s a great opportunity to talk with professional news managers looking for reporters, online journalists, copy/section editors, page designers, graphic artists and photographers. Weekly newspapers have again been invited to interview students interested in community journalism. At lunch, students can talk with professionals in a less formal setting. Coffee and pastries and lunch are included. The $10 registration fee will be reimbursed for the first 25 students who sign-up and attend the job fair. Community Involvement Fair
You can make a difference in your community! Stop by the Coffman Memorial Union on Wednesday, Oct. 3 between 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to learn more about volunteer and internship opportunities in the Twin Cities. The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduate students either to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor or work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project.  Over 5,000 students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students have developed detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors have gained the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. Job Opening at Usability Services
The Usability Services in the Office of Information Technology objective is to provide web design teams with the user perspective on their designs and conduct usability evaluations of computer interface designs for web applications and web site.  The Usability Lab Assistant is for an undergraduate student who has open time in his/her Fall 2007 class schedule on both Monday and Wednesday afternoons, from 1:15 - 6:00 p.m.

The job pays $13.08/hour with a guaranteed minimum of 8 hr/week and a maximum of 25 hr/week.   The actual work schedule will vary from week to week depending on lab schedule   Student employees learn one week in advance which hours they are assigned to work the following week.   Most work assignments are during the day on weekdays, but sometimes evening or weekend hours are needed.  Students hired for this position are required to be current undergraduates and are expected to work at least until the end of Fall Semester. Student Work-study Job in SJMC’s Digital Media Studio
A student assistant is needed in the digital media studio supporting journalism students and instructors with print, photographic and video hardware and software. Duties include basic troubleshooting with computer logins and access to servers, preparation of equipment reservations and checkout of equipment, basic maintenance and troubleshooting of printers and computer peripherals. Assist instructors and students in setting up and utilizing lab equipment. Student assistant will do basic cleaning and enforcing of lab use policies. Students should have basic operational skills with digital camcorders and video decks, digital still cameras, PC and Macintosh computers is helpful. Basic familiarity with non-linear editing systems, graphics and page layout programs will be helpful, but some training on-the-job will take place. Light web development skills are also desirable. Student assistant must be punctual and work well with people.

Editorial Intern for Twin Cities Business magazine
Applications are being accepted now through September 14 for an internship that begins September 25 and runs through December 21. Candidates should be students in a journalism or communications program, in their second year or beyond. Work consists primarily of fact checking, but also includes research, project management, and reporting and writing for publication. The job provides opportunities to take part in meetings on story planning and design, ad sales, and magazine production. This is a full-time position that can be filled by one person or by two candidates whose schedules and skills enable them to do a job share. Hours are flexible, but will be limited to standard business hours and weekdays. Work must be performed on site at our office in downtown Minneapolis. This is a paid position, at a rate of $10/hour.

Knight Foundation and MTV Partner on Global Grant Program for Young Digital Journalism Pioneers 
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and MTV announced last week the Knight News Challenge "Young Creators Award," a new digital journalism grant program for young people age 25 and under anywhere in the world.  The contest will award up to $500,000 to young creators with compelling ideas for using digitally delivered news and information to enhance physical communities – improving the lives of people where they live, work and vote.    The new award is a component of the Knight News Challenge, an annual competition awarding $5 million for innovative ideas using digital experiments to transform community news.   MTV will soon begin promoting the award throughout its international network – spanning more than 160 countries and nearly 500 million households – with promo spots that have been created in nine different languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, French, Russian and more. This year, for the first time, the contest's Web site – www.newschallenge.org – will also allow entrants to invite public comment, to help improve their entries.  A special Web site has also been created for the Young Creators category at think.mtv.com and at www.youngcreatorsaward.com. The Web site will accept applications through Oct. 15, 2007. Winners are expected to be announced by the spring of 2008.

The Freedom Forum-NCAA Sports Journalism Scholarship Application 2007-08
The Freedom Forum, in cooperation with the NCAA, is seeking scholarship applications from college juniors with career goals in sports journalism, majors in journalism, or experience in campus sports journalism. Eight $3,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2007-08 academic year to outstanding sports journalists. These awards are only available to current full-time juniors who will be completing their senior year in 2007-08. For more information and an application visit the NCAA website at www.ncaa.org. Preparing Future Faculty
Through its core courses – Teaching in Higher Education followed by a Practicum course – the Preparing Future Faculty Program provides a teaching and learning forum in which participants engage with a multidisciplinary, cross-cultural mix of masters students, doctoral candidates, and post-doctoral fellows. Participants discuss learning theory and strategies, develop teaching skills, create classroom and job search materials, and work with faculty from a range of institutional types.

International TA Program
The International TA Program provides nonnative English speaking graduate students with an opportunity to sharpen their use of discipline-specific English, master a variety of teaching and presentation strategies, and engage in meaningful analyses of the culture of teaching and learning at the University of Minnesota.
