ANNOUNCEMENTS

First Day of Class
Fall semester classes begin TODAY! If you are enrolled but do not attend the first day of class, you may lose your place in class to another student.

  • Instructors will take attendance and will note:
    • Any enrolled students who did NOT attend class.
    • All WAIT LIST students who did attend class.
  • Instructors will provide this information to the Student Services Center (SSC).
  • If a class has vacancies, the SSC will determine which WAIT LIST STUDENTS will be admitted, based on seniority and meeting course prerequisites.

Admitted WAIT LIST students will receive a class permission number by email, using their OFFICIAL UNIVERSITY EMAIL ADDRESS, and must enroll in the class promptly -within 24 hours- to secure their seat in the class

Applications for Major Status
Applications for major status are now available in 110 Murphy Hall. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 21. To apply, students must first attend a pre-major informational meeting. Meeting times are posted at the front counter in 110 Murphy.

New Majors
If you were admitted to the journalism major at the end of spring semester, stop by 110 Murphy Hall during the second week of spring semester to be assigned a faculty adviser. Make sure you bring your completed sample program plan and your student handbook with you.

SJMC Alumni Mentor Program
SJMC juniors, seniors and graduate students are eligible to participate in the SJMC Alumni Mentor Program. Online application forms and further information will be available at www.sjmc.umn.edu the first day of fall semester, but you must attend one of the mandatory information sessions before you submit your application. The deadline to apply is Monday, September 24. Mentor Information Sessions will be offered by members of the SJMC Alumni Board at the following times:

Tuesday, September 11 at 1:30 p.m.
Thursday, September 13 at 3 p.m.
Tuesday, September 18 at Noon
Thursday, September 20 at 5 p.m.
Friday, September 21 at 4 p.m.

Information sessions will be held in the SJMC Conference Center unless otherwise noted.

Serve on an SJMC committee this year
This is your chance to help shape SJMC policy! Applications for Student Representatives are now available in 110 Murphy Hall. Students can pick up applications to volunteer as a representative to the SJMC Alumni Board or Undergraduate Committee. Two students will serve on each committee. Sports Career/Internship Fair
The Minnesota Twins are hosting the 3rd annual Sports Career/Internship Fair at the Metrodome on Tuesday, September 18th from 3:30 – 6:30 PM. The 2007 Sports Career/Internship Fair will offer prospective employees the opportunity to learn about a variety of employment and internship opportunities with many teams and sports related organizations throughout the upper Midwest.  The fair will be exclusive to participants who register for the event in advance ($24.50) or at the door ($30, subject to availability).  The entry fee will include one lower reserved ticket to the 7:10 game that night against the Texas Rangers and a food coupon that can be redeemed for a hot dog and soft drink at one of the Metrodome concession stands.

Graduate and Professional School Day
Over 100 graduate and professional schools from across the country will be represented at the University of Minnesota’s Graduate and Professional School Day, on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Great Hall of Coffman Union. This exciting annual event offers individuals the opportunity to discuss graduate and professional school applications/admission procedures, explore degree requirements, attend related workshops, obtain information on admission tests, compare graduate programs, and speak with representatives from a variety of graduate and professional programs including Law, Business, and Education. Minnesota Associated Press Job Fair
The 10th annual print/online journalism jobs fair sponsored by the 29 daily newspapers that make up the Minnesota AP Association will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Coffman Memorial Union. It’s a great opportunity to talk with professional news managers looking for reporters, online journalists, copy/section editors, page designers, graphic artists and photographers. Weekly newspapers have again been invited to interview students interested in community journalism. At lunch, students can talk with professionals in a less formal setting. Coffee and pastries and lunch are included. The $10 registration fee will be reimbursed for the first 25 students who sign-up and attend the job fair. Get paid for your research ideas!
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides grants of up to $1,700 for undergraduate students either to carry out a project of the student's own design in close collaboration with a faculty sponsor or work with a faculty member on her/his scholarly or creative project.  Over 5,000 students and faculty across the University have already discovered the benefits of these hands-on research opportunities in laboratories, studios, libraries, and field sites. Participating students have developed detailed knowledge of research methods while their faculty sponsors have gained the assistance of enthusiastic and capable students. Student Work-study Job in SJMC’s Digital Media Studio!
A student assistant is needed in the digital media studio supporting journalism students and instructors with print, photographic and video hardware and software. Duties include basic troubleshooting with computer logins and access to servers, preparation of equipment reservations and checkout of equipment, basic maintenance and troubleshooting of printers and computer peripherals. Assist instructors and students in setting up and utilizing lab equipment. Student assistant will do basic cleaning and enforcing of lab use policies. Students should have basic operational skills with digital camcorders and video decks, digital still cameras, PC and Macintosh computers is helpful. Basic familiarity with non-linear editing systems, graphics and page layout programs will be helpful, but some training on-the-job will take place. Light web development skills are also desirable. Student assistant must be punctual and work well with people.

Office for Equity and Diversity (OED) Job Opportunity
The Office for Equity and Diversity seeks a Web and Communications Assistant to assist with the maintenance of its Web site (http://www.academic.umn.edu/equity/) and other communications projects.  This is a work-study position; only students with work-study awards will be considered.  Job responsibilities include:

* Updating content and links on OED web site using Dreamweaver
* Creating new web pages using existing templates in Dreamweaver, and populating new pages with content
* Writing content for the web and other OED publications
* Preparing and managing photos for the web site and OED photo library
* Other communications-related projects as assigned, including assistance with print publications, event planning, and database maintenance.  To some extent, project work will be assigned based on student's interests and learning goals.

Qualified candidates must be proficient with Dreamweaver and have excellent writing skills.  Experience with Photoshop, an interest in issues of equity and diversity, and a major or career interest in journalism and public relations are preferred.  Pay is $9/hour minimum, depending on qualifications, for 10-15 hours of work per week.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

CLA Undergraduate Internship Grant
Students who are of sophomore standing or above and are working for an unpaid, off-campus internship are eligible to apply. The Freedom Forum-NCAA Sports Journalism Scholarship Application 2007-08
The Freedom Forum, in cooperation with the NCAA, is seeking scholarship applications from college juniors with career goals in sports journalism, majors in journalism, or experience in campus sports journalism. Eight $3,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2007-08 academic year to outstanding sports journalists. These awards are only available to current full-time juniors who will be completing their senior year in 2007-08. For more information and an application visit the NCAA website at www.ncaa.org. ACADEMIC, CAREER & NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES

Consider representing the SJMC in The Council of Graduate Students (COGS). COGS represents the interests of all graduate students at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. It is COGS mission to work with the all components of the University community - most specifically the Graduate School and central administration - to make sure the needs of graduate students are known and addressed.

COGS is an open and democratic organization comprised of graduate students from across the University. COGS provides opportunities for graduate students to participate actively in University administrative and policy-making decisions, as well as social and cultural programming and job training. The backbone of the organization are Department Representatives, composed of students selected by all degree-granting programs at the University. COGS also elects representatives to serve on University-wide committees, on Policy and Review Councils, and in the University Senate. Together, COGS represents over 10,000 students.
