Concrete was created by students enrolled in the Fall 2011 JOUR 5174 Magazine Editing and Production class. The magazine is driven by an innovative vision to explore the life of cities: why they pulse, what makes them beat and how they are impacting the world. At Concrete, the focus is on learning from the past and examining the present to project the future. Passionate about human, environmental and concrete aspects of metropolitan life, both the magazine and website offer a wealth of information delivered with strong writing and sleek design. With our formative ideas we aim to provide the highest quality magazine for the forward-thinking urbanite.

Students in the Spring 2011 JOUR 5174 Magazine Editing and Production class produced a magazine and companion Web site called Flatline, which investigated all aspects of death, dying and the afterlife. The magazine garnered attention from the community, as well as here at the U, especially in the mortuary science program.

Samples of student work from JOUR 4302 Electronic Photojournalism, a basic skills course designed to teach a journalism student the fundamentals of electronic photojournalism as practiced by newsrooms across all forms of media. The focus of the course is on the fundamental skills of identifying stories, gathering facts, analyzing that information and photographing those stories. Every week, students from JOUR 4452 Electronic Newscast Producing create "University Report." The newscast covers University issues and Twin Cities news.
Samples of student work from JOUR 4451 Advanced Electronic News Writing and Reporting. The emphasis of this course is researching, reporting, shooting, writing and editing TV news packages. Students learn to master the use of digital cameras and a desktop non-linear system (Final Cut Pro). Students also learn how to better write to video, how to improve their voice work and on-camera performance. Students research reports, shoot, write and edit TV news packages and create a resume tape. Students will contribute reporting, writing, anchoring and other work for University Report, the University’s online broadcast news program. View more student work from JOUR 4451.
