Graduate Minor in Mass Communication

Students seeking the M.A. or Ph.D. in other departments at the University of Minnesota may complete a minor in mass communication. Minor programs are planned in consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies or another member of the SJMC graduate faculty. All minor course work must be 5xxx-level or 8xxx-level; inclusion of 4xxx-level courses on minor programs is subject to approval by the Director of Graduate Studies.

The M.A. minor consists of a minimum of nine credits in a coherent area, with at least six credits at the 8xxx-level.

The Ph.D. minor program consists of a minimum of 14 credits in a coherent disciplinary area. Students completing Ph.D. minors in mass communication are required to take a preliminary written examination covering their course work.

Endorsement of the minor program by the Director of Graduate Studies must appear on the student's M.A. or Ph.D. degree program form when submitted to the Graduate School.

Students interested in pursuing a mass communication minor should list the appropriate courses on their Degree Program form (PDF) and obtain the signature of the SJMC Director of Graduate Studies before submitting the form to the Graduate School.

Ph.D. minor in Political Psychology: Ph.D. students also have the option of completing a minor in Political Psychology; several SJMC faculty are associated with the Political Psychology program. Learn more about the Political Psychology minor.
