For Alumni and Employers

The 8,000 living alumni of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications are a vital part of the SJMC community. Since 1917, when the School began awarding the bachelor’s degree, more than 7,500 students have been awarded the B.A. in journalism. The school has awarded nearly 1,000 M.A. degrees since 1930, and almost 200 Ph.D. degrees since 1939.

Graduates of the School are prepared to be leaders in the fields of professional journalism, strategic communications, and mass communications, and SJMC alumni are often recruited by local and national employers for jobs in these fields.

About SJMC Alumni: SJMC’s alumni include luminaries in many fields, including newspapers, magazines, television, advertising, public relations, and higher education. The SJMC Alumni Board coordinates a number of programs to keep alumni connected to the School, including a popular undergraduate mentoring program and the Alumni Award for Excellence.

For Employers: Employers who are interested in hiring SJMC students or alumni for internships or jobs are encouraged to utilize the University's GoldPASS system.

Giving to SJMC: The School is proud of its strong history of private giving by alumni to the SJMC. In 2004, the SJMC received almost $750,000 in private donations to support student scholarships, faculty research, programming, and other School priorities.
