The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota is part of the College of Liberal Arts and is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Journalism and Mass Communication. Founded in 1922, the School has been ranked in several national surveys as among the foremost journalism schools in the United States. The school is housed in Murphy Hall, renovated in 1999, and includes 22 full-time faculty and more than 30 adjunct instructors
Job Description: The School of Journalism and Mass Communication invites nominations and applications for a 100 percent time, nine-month, temporary faculty position at the rank of assistant professor for the academic year 2008/09, 25 August 2008 to 24 May 2009. We are seeking a colleague who can teach lecture courses such as information for mass communication, the media in American history and law, history of mass communication, history of media communication, or history of journalism. Additional teaching responsibilities could include working with honors and individualized study students.
The successful candidate will have an active program of scholarly research or creative activity that includes publication, exhibition, or performance; develop and teach a range of courses; advise students regarding coursework and broader academic goals; provide service appropriate for the rank of the appointment to the department, college, University, and profession; and contribute to outreach activities that support the department’s mission. Four semester courses, including introductory courses and a mix of other required courses in areas of expertise.
Required/Preferred Qualifications: Applicants must hold a PhD in Mass Communication, Journalism or related discipline, or other appropriate terminal degree; e.g., J.D., M.F.A. by the date of the appointment. Professional journalism experience is required. Successful candidates will demonstrate promise of excellence in teaching; promise of excellence in working with graduate students in theoretically-grounded MA and PhD program; an ongoing program of research; and a commitment to establishing linkages with the professional and related academic departments. Salary will depend on the successful candidate's qualifications, consistent with collegiate and university policies.
