About Us

Ken Stone

Ken Stone spent 20 years in radio and television news as a reporter, news anchor, news producer, talk show host, documentary producer and news director. He worked in commercial radio and television for six years and then spent 14 years in public television and radio. For 7 years, he was an anchor and reporter for Twin City Public Television’s NewsNight Minnesota. He currently runs his own media consulting and video production company. He is an Emmy award winner for documentary work and also a two-time winner of the Silver Baton, Columbia University’s broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize.

Since he joined the faculty in 2002, SJMC students have won 8 Emmy Awards in addition to the Hearst Award, a national awards competition for student television journalists.

Professional Experience

Rock Solid Media

  • Produce informational, marketing and fundraising videos for various non-profit organizations and corporations. Other services include speechwriting and media coaching for executives.

  • Also do production work for various national television series including Tree Stories and Ethical Marketplace.

 

Twin Cities Public TV, St. Paul, Minnesota (1994-2001)

Show Producer

  • helped launch nationally recognized nightly news program NewsNight Minnesota

Executive Producer

  • promoted to newsroom’s top position and oversaw $1.7 million annual budget

  • supervisor for editorial staff of 16 responsible for hiring and firing of employees promotions, training and staff development

  • responsible for overall editorial policies, daily script review, long range planning, internal and external relations

Anchor/Reporter (April 1996 – August 2001)

  • anchored newscasts and conducted live studio interviews

  • researched, wrote, produced and reported in-depth packages, including series of reports that won a Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton award

  • international reporting includes work in Kosovo, Macedonia, Germany and Mexico

  • hosted special events including gubernatorial debates, live election night coverage and live town meeting with First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton
